Probably all characters but the new ones and especially Sanada clan members are most important. But game runs awfully so I suggest to wait for some updates.
Just play and follow story, all character from previous series available.

why cant usng joystick???
Use microsoft xbox joystick working well.
I recently tried x360ce emulator with Generic USB Joystick and working well. This emulator emulate any Joystick so the game read it as microsoft xbox 360 controller in your pc, you just need to configure it properly.
Sometimes slow, even with i7 8G RAM 2GB VGA. Hope the update will release soon to fix this problem.
Update your PC driver. Slower performance in your pc is not related bug problem, it is because of your PC.
